Bonding experience broken down in ages.

bonding Aug 04, 2024

I've been thinking about bonding experiences with my kids throughout the years. Some were intentional and some were just made up along the way. It made more sense to me to break it down in age groups because there are so many to remember. These are ones that I remember and that worked for our family. I hope some of these help give you some ideas to bond with yours.
Let's start with ages 0-3

  1. Library Story Time was huge during these years. We spent hours in the library checking out and reading books and playing with toys or other kids after Story Time was over.
  2. Long baths were a must to make the long nights go by a little bit easier.
  3. Mommy/Daddy and me swim classes were super fun with other parents and helped them get comfortable in the water.
  4. Anything outside like stroller walks, wagons to the beach, or hiking. Mostly the babies end up falling asleep which give you a bit of alone time. But most importantly, it get's your child and you into nature which has many benefits.
  5. I read lots and lots of books to them throughout the day and a lot at evening before bed. Sometime they couldn't get enough of one book and other times I would read all 20 books we checked out from the library. Either way, we bonded through each book we read. They remember a lot of those books still to this day, which is mind-blowing.
  6. Start playing simple games like matching and puzzles.
  7. Stop at every park and check it out. My kids still ask to go to the park. It is a cheap and super fun way to spend the afternoon. My daughter could've swung for hours if I let her when she was 0-3.

Next we move onto ages 4-9
This is when they start learning/doing all the things by themselves. Be patient, they are trying and their little legs and minds will only last so long!

  1. Little walks or hikes. I still brought a stroller or a Baby Bjorn in case they refused to walk anymore.
  2. This age is when we started playing lots of games. Our favorites are Crazy Eights, Old Maid, Zingo, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Mousetrap, Jenga, Life, Puzzles, Kids against Maturity and many more. It's so fun to watch their little minds working and learn how to be a good sport.
  3. At this age they start getting interested in sports. Of course they want to check out all different kinds like soccer, dance, tumbling or mountain biking. But it's fun to have a few that the whole family can do. It can be as simple as frisbee, kickball or riding bikes. Our family lives about 7 to 8 months in the snow so we loved to snowboard together. In the summer we like to go to the nearest resevoirs and kayak & paddleboard. We also love to hike together. Last year my kids summited their first mountain!
  4. This is also a fun age to take them to Amusement Parks, the Zoo or different musuems. I don't like to take them too much. It get's expensive and it's exhausting!
  5. Art art art. Not all kids love art but most do and it's a fun activity to do together. A great family oriented website is art4kidshub this is the cutest dad that draws with his family. They draw pretty much everything you can think of and make it super easy and very fun to learn.

and last but not least 10-14
These ages I think are so much fun because they are figuring out who they are and what they like and now you can just enjoy being with them.

  1. These years seem to be spent a lot of the time in the car going from activity or school. Make this time count. Have important conversations. Play silly games. My kids have enjoyed I Spy or the Bingo car cards. Sometimes they read, crochet or just look out the window and think about things.
  2. Traveling is a great way to include all the kids. Even ones that are starting to get older and don't want to hang out with the family as much as they do friends.
  3. Your children may be reading perfectly at this age but that doesn't mean you should stop reading to them or have them read to you. This is my favorite way to bond. I get to relax and listen to my kids read. Sometimes I even fall alseep for a few minutes which is bliss! My favorite Podcast (Read Aloud Revival) has book suggestions and wonderful suggestions about getting your children to fall in love with reading.
  4. My daughter and I have bonded so much this year by crocheting together. I use to crochet years ago but now that my daughter has taught herself, we have so much fun making amigurumi. We have crocheted a pencil, cactus plant and beanies together. This summer we learned how to make friendship bracelets. These are super easy and fun to give as presents.
This is where I get to stop because I am not yet at the 14-18 years of age yet. But I would love to learn some ideas to bond with these ages because I know it starts becoming harded to connect and bond. Please comment on ideas for bonding so we can keep these experiences going.

Thanks for reading.
